Hello! My name is Olga Vasilievna and I am an English teacher from Sumy, School 18. Bernard Shaw once said,”Labour is doing what you must, leisure is doing what you like.” If these go together, you work more effectively not only for yourself but for the larger whole. I am happy to say that I am one of these great playwrights because it seems I like what I do at school and I do it not only for money but for personal enjoyment. English has always been the great LOVE of my life. I love the language and try do make learning it interesting and easy for my pupils. Camp EXCITE has been one of the most important things in my life since 2009 and I am happy to be a part of it. Welcome to Camp EXCITE! Have fun and learn as much as you can. I am looking forward to seeing you.
Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I am from the lovely state of Texas. I will be a co-director of Camp EXCITE 2017 with Ben Stewart. I’ve lived in Sumy for a year so far working as a Community Development Volunteer at the Center for Euroinitiatives. I love living in Sumy and am so excited to help get this great camp restarted in the community! Strong supporter of Wonder Woman! (and the new movie!)
Всем привет! My name is Ben and I’m an English teacher here in Sumy city. I will be your Co-Director (along with Lauren Grubbs) for Camp EXCITE 2017, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to revive this awesome tradition! I will be bringing my guitar, sense of sarcasm, and love for the outdoors (and English) to Kurhan this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing what lies in store for you, our campers, as well as our counselors and staff. Also, I think Wolverine is the coolest.
Jeff Pflanz is from the great state of Iowa and graduated from Boston College. He is now serving as a Community Economic Development (CD) Volunteer in Berdychiv, Ukraine. His interests include hiking, radio, ultimate frisbee, & running half marathons. He thinks the best superhero is, unquestionably, Batman.
Dequan (also known as DQ) is a community development volunteer at Zhytomyr Oblast, Pulin Community and Business Center. He likes all SPORTS, especially basketball. Now he has a new habit, hiking in the Carpathian. During his free time, Dequan enjoys traveling to different cities and getting lost.
“I’m excited to work with my fellow volunteers to make this camp super fun.”
My name is Jaclyn White, an American Peace Corps Volunteer from Arizona. I currently live in Trostyanets, in the Sumska Oblast, and teach English at School N.2. Camping, being in nature and sitting around the camp fire are my favorite things to do in the summer! I also enjoy dancing to music, drawing and coloring, swimming and reading. I am so excited to be a part of the Camp Excite team and cannot wait until August is here!
Hello! Originally I am from the Chicago area, but right now I’m a Youth Development Volunteer living in Sumy, working at a Youth Center. Before coming to Ukraine I finished my bachelors degree in Sociology with a focus in Civic Engagement at Illinois State University. I love listening and discovering new music, fitness, watching movies, traveling, and spending time with my friends. My favorite super hero is Arya (from Game of Thrones), and I’m super excited to be counselor at Camp EXCITE!
I am Glenn Anderson, a high school history teacher for 27 years, now living in Lviv and teaching at Lviv Polytechnic. I enjoy hiking and camping, riding my motorcycle on back country roads, and, especially, reading. My favorite superhero is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in part because the demons she battles are really stand-ins for the demons we all face in life. Plus, it is a pretty hilarious show.
Phil Quam is from Virginia Beach, Virginia and is a graduate of East Carolina and Old Dominion Universities with degrees in English and Writing. He likes reading, writing, but not arithmetic. He spent last year in Indonesia and came to Ukraine with the U.S. Peace Corps in September. He looks forward to working with young writers in poetry and songwriting.
